The inception of the Centre for Plant Medicine Research traces back to the pioneering efforts of the Clinical Research Department. Spearheaded by Dr. Oku Ampofo, who, upon completing his medical training, embarked on a collaborative journey with herbalists. Together, they delved into patient care, offering herbal remedies and treatments. This grassroots initiative laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Centre in 1975 by the government. Dr. Ampofo, recognized as the trailblazer in this endeavor, seamlessly transitioned his clinical practice to assume the role of the Centre’s inaugural Director, cementing his legacy in advancing herbal medicine research and healthcare provision.
The Clinic department plays a vital role in both clinical research and patient care. Its primary functions encompass:
1. Recording pertinent patient information.
2. Providing outpatient consultations.
3. Conducting clinical trials on the Centre’s products.
4. Conducting clinical studies on certified herbalist products, including anti-HIV medication and antibiotics.
5. Offering clinical laboratory services for patients.
6. Facilitating the training of Medical Herbalist interns, students on attachment, and National Service Personnel.
This department serves as a cornerstone in bridging the gap between research and healthcare delivery, ensuring comprehensive care and advancement in herbal medicine practices.
